Hot Summer Backstage Burlesque Course inspiration!

OK it’s HOT but I find the heat reminds me of backstage as I plan my next Burlesque Course and Belly dance Classes!  The hot sweaty, high Summer heat and petrol fumes, backstage at the Bulldog Bash comes to mind at this time of year!  I felt so alive and excited to perform, the energy was electric, almost literally from the metal band onstage.  Trying to get ready felt unreal, I couldn’t hear a thing, but I remember charming Hells Angels stage hands steered me up what looked more like an Eddie the Eagle metal take off ramp than a stage entrance!  I was blinded by lights, adrenaline and the Harley Davidsons and big screens flanking the stage.  Blind as a bat, ironic really as I was wearing a giant rubber bat costume, don’t get me started on wearing that costume in the heat!

I felt tiny and had to draw on every ounce of my performance skill to fill the stage and connect with the 5000 strong audience in the Biggest Marquee I’ve ever seen.  I remember I could barely hear the music as they didn’t have a monitor onstage, I was the only dancer and it had just been overlooked.  So I also had to overcome not being able to feel the music and fall back on my rehearsal muscle memory.  You’d be surprised how often this happens as a performer!  Anyway needless to say it was thrilling to perform my Burlesque Batman V Wonderwoman Act in that heat!

Performing gives me a deep well of experience and excitement to draw on in class.  OK so we don’t quite get to these giddy heights nonetheless teaching feels fun and joyful to me.  I love it most when we share a laugh or a Eureka moment of a move falling into place or leaving with a little more confidence than came in.
